ANNOTATED 303 PATTERNS

Five small patterns that isolate one musical idea at a time.

These are original study patterns written for 303box. They are not transcriptions of released tracks. Each example is intentionally simple so you can enter it by hand, hear the result, then change one decision and understand what changed.

How to read the examples

Each example lists sixteen steps. A dash means rest. “U” means octave up and “D” means octave down. Accent and slide are listed separately so you can hear the effect of adding them after the rhythm and pitch already work.

Do not treat the examples as presets that must stay unchanged. The point is to edit them. Change one rest into a note. Move one accent. Remove one slide. Lower one octave. Small changes teach more than replacing the whole pattern at once.

Example 1 — Sparse A-minor pulse

Goal: make the groove come from rests and repetition rather than pitch variety.

Accent: steps 01, 09 and 15.

Slide: step 03 into 04; step 08 into 09.

The phrase uses only four pitch classes, but it does not feel static because the same A appears in different contexts. Step 1 gives a clear anchor. The rest on step 2 creates room before A returns. The C on step 4 acts like a small answer, while the octave-up A on step 8 gives the end of the first half extra lift. The accent on step 9 makes G feel like a new phrase even though the rhythm remains related.

Try removing the notes on steps 6 and 11. The pattern becomes even more percussive. Then put only one of them back. This is a useful demonstration of how adding fewer notes can create more identity.

Example 2 — One-note octave conversation

Goal: prove that a single pitch class can still create movement.

Slide: step 12 into 13.

There is no melodic complexity here: every note is C. The musical information comes from register and timing. Step 5 jumps up an octave, step 12 rises again, and step 13 drops below the center. That descending slide feels dramatic because the ear has been trained to hear C as a stable pitch.

This example is useful when a pattern feels too “written.” Replace a busy melody with one pitch and preserve only the gate rhythm. If the rhythm still works, the phrase has a strong foundation. If it collapses, the melody may have been hiding a weak groove.

Example 3 — Slide as tension, not decoration

Goal: use only two slides, both aimed at meaningful destination notes.

The G-to-G# movement creates a half-step pull. Because it happens only twice, the ear notices it. Accenting the destination makes the arrival more obvious. If every transition were slid, that tension would lose its special role.

To study the effect, first play the pattern with no slides. Then enable only step 3. Listen to how the phrase suddenly points toward step 4. After that, enable step 14. The second slide acts like a callback near the end of the bar.

Example 4 — Offbeat answer pattern

Goal: leave the obvious downbeats empty so the bass line answers the drum groove instead of simply doubling it.

Slide: step 14 into 15.

Starting with a rest makes the phrase feel like it enters after the beat. This is especially useful against a four-on-the-floor kick. The bass does not need to confirm every kick; it can occupy the spaces between them.

Try moving the note on step 2 to step 1. The entire phrase becomes more grounded. Then move it back to step 2 and compare. This single-step shift demonstrates why placement can matter more than pitch choice.

Example 5 — Accent architecture

Goal: use a repeated pitch sequence while accents define the large shape of the bar.

Accent: steps 01, 05, 09 and 14.

Slide: step 14 into 15.

The accents form a larger rhythm across the sixteen steps. Steps 1, 5 and 9 create a regular reference, then step 14 breaks the expectation before the last A. That final deviation makes the end of the bar feel intentional.

Remove every accent and the notes remain the same, but the phrase becomes flatter. Then add only steps 1 and 14. This comparison makes it easier to hear accent as structure rather than as a global “more aggressive” setting.

How to turn an example into your own pattern

  1. Enter the example exactly once so you have a reference.
  2. Listen without delay or distortion and keep filter movement moderate.
  3. Change one gate decision: note to rest, or rest to note.
  4. Change one pitch while keeping the rhythm.
  5. Move one accent to a different active step.
  6. Remove or relocate one slide.
  7. Only after the phrase works, change cutoff, resonance, envelope modulation and decay.

This order protects the musical information. If you change rhythm, pitch, expression and effects simultaneously, you may like the result but you will not know which decision created it.

Why these examples are intentionally limited

A study pattern should make cause and effect obvious. Dense six-note runs, constant slides and accents on half the bar can sound exciting, but they are poor teaching material because too many variables move at once. These patterns leave space so the role of each decision remains audible.

Once you understand the mechanism, ignore the rules. Acid music often becomes interesting when a stable pattern is pushed through extreme sound design or live performance. The limitation belongs to the exercise, not to the final music.

Next exercise: keep the rhythm, replace every pitch

Choose one example and preserve only its rests and active steps. Replace the notes with a new three-note set. Keep the accents and slides unchanged for the first pass. You will hear which parts of the character came from rhythm and expression rather than from the original pitch choices.

Then do the opposite: keep the notes but invent a new gate pattern. This is one of the fastest ways to learn that a 303 line is not merely a sequence of note names.

How these examples were checked

Each example was entered into the same sixteen-step grid readers use, auditioned at more than one tempo and reviewed one layer at a time: gate pattern first, pitch order second, then accent, slide and octave. The patterns are original teaching material for 303box, not transcriptions of released tracks.

The purpose of the annotations is falsifiable: remove the marked accents, slides or rests and listen for the described change. If the explanation does not survive that edit, it does not belong in the example.
