The six decisions inside a 303 step
Think of every step as a compact musical instruction. The note chooses pitch, the gate decides whether sound happens, octave changes register, accent changes pressure, slide connects pitch motion and a tie keeps continuity. The strongest patterns use these decisions selectively.

Choose the pitch. In 303box the note picker is constrained to valid chromatic notes so a step cannot contain arbitrary text.
Gate: trigger, tie and rest
A trigger starts a note. A tie keeps continuity into the next step. A rest leaves silence. Rests are not empty space to be “fixed”; they are part of the groove.
Octave U / D
U raises the selected step one octave and D lowers it one octave. Octave moves can turn a repetitive line into a call-and-response phrase without changing its pitch class.
Accent
Accent marks the steps that should hit harder and open the sound more aggressively. Two or three well-placed accents often work better than accenting half the bar.
Slide
Slide creates a continuous pitch transition into the next note instead of treating the two notes as completely separate events. The destination matters: a short slide into a tense note can transform an otherwise simple pattern.
A reliable 16-step construction method
- Start with the rhythm only. Place six to ten note events and leave the other steps as rests.
- Choose a root and two to four nearby notes. Repeat notes on purpose.
- Add one or two octave changes at the end of a four-step phrase or before a downbeat.
- Accent the steps that should answer the kick, clap or phrase ending.
- Add slide only between notes where the transition adds musical meaning.
- Loop the pattern before changing the filter. If the dry rhythm does not groove, filter movement will not rescue it.
Why random generation often sounds bad
Independent random choices ignore musical dependency. A useful generator has to understand that slide requires a destination, that an accent should land on a meaningful event, that every four-step region needs some rhythmic identity and that too many active notes remove bounce.
303box generation uses rhythmic masks, repeated motifs, controlled mutation, weighted pitch choices, accent placement and limited slides. It also pairs the generated bass line with acid-oriented rhythm profiles instead of rolling every cell independently.
How many notes should a good acid pattern use?
There is no fixed number, but a one-bar 16-step pattern often feels stronger with a modest number of active events. Eight to twelve can be energetic; six to nine can be spacious and funky. The more notes you use, the more important rests, ties and register changes become.
Pitch variety is a separate question. A pattern may contain ten active events while using only three unique pitches. That is completely normal for acid music.
Accent and slide: common mistakes
Too much accent
If every step is accented, there is no contrast. Treat accent as punctuation.
Slide with no useful destination
Sliding from a note to the same pitch can preserve legato but does not create audible pitch travel. For a clearly audible glide, connect different pitches or octaves.
Slide everywhere
Continuous glide can make the pattern mushy. Keep some notes detached so the slides feel special.
Ignoring rhythm
Slide is not a substitute for a good gate pattern. The line should already have a rhythmic identity before you add expression.
Filter controls after the pattern works
Cutoff sets the basic opening of the filter. Resonance emphasizes the cutoff region and produces the familiar acid edge. Env Mod controls how strongly the envelope moves the filter, while Decay controls how long that movement lasts. Accent can add extra pressure to selected steps.
303box also includes Tune, Delay and Distortion. Tune shifts the bass globally; Delay adds tempo-related space; Distortion increases harmonic density. Start with Delay and Distortion at zero while you judge the pattern itself.
Pattern and rhythm should share a pocket
The bass line does not exist in isolation. Four-on-the-floor kick gives a strong reference, hats create subdivision and clap or snare can define the backbeat. A bass trigger just before or after those drum events can feel more interesting than simply doubling them.

From browser pattern to hardware
There are two useful routes. With supported Web MIDI, send the pattern to a connected MIDI output. For a more traditional workflow, download the pattern image and enter the notes, octave moves, accents and slides manually on your instrument.
The visual sheet is deliberately simple because it should remain readable beside hardware, in a rehearsal, or on a phone.

What is the difference between tie and slide?
A tie is about continuity of the note/gate. Slide is about continuous pitch movement toward another note. They can work together, but they describe different behavior.
Does U/D change the note name?
No. It changes the register by one octave. C with U is still the pitch class C, one octave higher.
Should the pattern start on step 1?
Not necessarily. Leaving step 1 empty or using an offbeat opening can make the line feel more syncopated.
Can I use the generated pattern as a starting point?
That is the intended workflow. Generate a musically structured line, then change one or two steps until the phrase becomes yours.
A five-minute validation exercise
Create a pattern using only C, D# and G. Activate steps 1, 4, 7, 8, 11 and 15; leave real rests elsewhere. Listen once with no accent or slide. Then accent steps 1 and 11 and slide step 7 into step 8. This isolates rhythm, pressure and pitch continuity so each change can be heard instead of accepted as theory.
